Christine Baldeschi’s group has the objective of developing protocols for differentiation in which hES and iPS cells will differentiate into epidermal cells such as keratinocytes and melanocytes. This group created the first reconstitution of human epidermis from embryonic stem cells; they have also developed a protocol for the production of pure and homogeneous melanocytes from pluripotent cells that are capable of localizing in the basal layer of the epidermis and of transferring their melanin to neighboring keratinocytes in order to protect them from the deleterious effects of UV light.
